where am I with my bag of sand
like a bad condition
with this little nest to press rest
every body a nothing that I am taking
home and home and home
a sleeping rain
my mouth still
after dining and talking
deer come in the night
where should I be
if not in my mind
among the granaries of sleep
I burn
where such variety of pictures
I enjoy no pleasure in the sight of them
the greatest plenty turns
to absence in my hands
in walking sleep
I attend business better
than most thinking men
but would to God I were clear
as my own money
I stand for little
clock with a looseness
at several times
so fear of day’s fire
made me call for ash
so sleep papers over
my morning
places made of bridges and old differences
I remember them afterwards
I have no friends but sleep
and the morning sand
time to sleep
the work I spend hours in
my father and others
go through my mind
and I receive their legacy
of evening
we listen
to everything new
tent in the woods
sleep to me
is a bad journey taken
in the country of a corpse
where night and day
quarrel and point
and turn in at one gate
last night in sleep I lost my papers
my morning
my change
my dinner
my cover
my head
and my sons that are nothing
like me
a park keeper told me
what the earth is
cockle shells and weather
dust and dead beds
a face for
the bountiful world
which we must of necessity
break in pieces
with words and blows
and a degree of madness
but what is the unhappiness in that
if the light is good
surely the land will never suffer
it is so great still
and every bird so quiet
like a hole the rain drowned
who am I
to live in unity
denying all the others
we carried with us
the mask remembering
things acted years ago
in my sleep
