an abundance of salt
for my ordinary table
ugly talk fear and tittle tattle
is all the news now
against the whole table
a tooth of night
pointed at any
glut of mirth
going where we are safe
as a lamb brought to table
in our sandwich selves
as Eve within Adam
who is even at home
in the salt of noon comes a dinner
made only of fat
the eye is a fine sight
to see at table
white and still
as an ignorant bed
I dare not reckon myself sure
till I have it in my mind
the rusted table not pretty
my books not neat
the clasp of an hour or two
is brought to a head
in poor parts of the world
fields go hungry
or rise to eat a peak
but we have excellent table-talk
my wife and I
her old morning gown
almost past use
like balance to the sober
The war
found a root
at my supper table—
no manners but
a cruel music.
All alone, the table—
a plain thing of perfect service—
fell into neglect.
Ignorant how things go,
I fear war, not time.
the evening train
I hear a mouse under
my table
the difference between us
is a table
every man minding
a nothing of several uses
employed to count ewes and esses
night and day
the table laid
for supper in the garden—
calling his name
wind and rain
we settle one by one
at the little table
