Lord’s day
and I mine with my pen
no time for war
In the war, my honor died.
Why give to those people
and deny to others?
If I could come home to my wife…
I sat with my hurt,
all out of Sundays.
Noon came
by appointment
after the war
and stayed till late.
I see what it is:
another night.
I work at leisure—
a holy war.
I have bought all my own
pleasures and so
proceed in a supper of ash,
ourselves a dish.
I lost my labor to the war,
my time to bed, my place
to a store of wine.
What a sad story!
I make one good thing:
a great quiet.
Char a bass and be glad.
The pater noster yesterday; war today.
Vexed to eat, vexed to be.
I answer a word as red as war
with play. We can act
like puppets, or be
content to be.
The poor
shall never please us,
even in war.
The devil, our broker,
broke in the street, angry
at all the blood
we drank.
My fat hat is an angry hat,
a troublesome hat, a weary hat,
a staid hat, a yesterday hat,
a war hat, a Big Brother hat.
War gives the world an ill music
in praise of the mad.
I ready a horse for war
this way: with a quake, a wick,
a lifetime within
his two ears.
Robbed of our light by the war,
too late to take
pleasure in talk,
I put on my night cloak.
