Cibola 3

I awake in the dark and shake free of sheets & blankets, of down-filled quilt. The rituals of waking– the long, hot shower, the coffee–give my mind the chance to keep drifting, let memory make what it will of the contours of sleep. Oddest of all are the dreams in which one awakes, forgetting all rituals. And it seems normal to go out naked, for instance, in the middle of winter. The snow’s alive, remember? It ripples, blue flames slip through the trees like fish. I feel fur sprouting all along my spine.

Without Sorrow

Stiff was the stringed bow as it was laid to rest Upon the pile of ferns after a long hard test The quiver empty and the arrow about The beast had fought, yes it was stout A hunger had settled upon my community Til it was left only to me to do what I could see To make it through the winter A puff of smoke from my mouth stood starkly in the air Reminded me of last night's frost and the snow in my daughter's hair It's not a woman's place to hunt for her families table A husband lost to a war so unstable The blood stood bright against the white of the snow Warm almost comforting against the sudden cold I cut and I skinned right straight to the bone

An evening in winter

It was dusk outside; inside the long hall Dinner was set; candles lit. Away, from the end of the corridor Twilight fell softly across the floor. At the other end, a door opened To a patch of sky and a green-capped tree. In the hall, alone at the table, I sat Staring at the food I really didn’t see. I didn’t hear him first; maybe I sensed – What was he after, inside a house? Silently he had entered from the garden Perhaps a gust of wind swept him in. A little sparrow, fluttering his wings, He skitters, flies up and down, zigzag. He almost hit the ceiling, and he didn’t - He tried to escape but the windows were closed.

Monochrome

A gentle, Lapping breeze. A slight, Winter chill. A distant, Cry of birds. A peaceful, Lull of waves. A passing, Swimming mermaid. A blaring, Faraway fire engine. A towering, Threatening dinosaur. A bleak, Colourless world.

Haiku 8

This particular shifting of the rain, I am just in time for it. Lemon-drop lamp and its wavering life reflected in the chai. Scrawlings, backwards, in the glass, in the sun, downtown escalator Red clouds catching sun, the hole at Sixth Avenue dark in minutes. “Red cells save lives” reads the bus for the blood drive– black letters on white. It’s happened again

Silent Cries

Softly floating around the town, The snowflakes gently fell So quiet they scarcely made a sound. From each delicate lace they were bound To hold a secret they wished to yell, Softly floating around the town. Intricate details carefully wound, Dirt or blood you could not tell. So quiet they scarcely made a sound. Each landed gracefully in a mound, Hiding the fate that she befell, Softly floating around the town. The snowflakes twisted and turned around, Much like performing for clientele, So quiet they scarcely made a sound. With beauty carefully crowned,

MY SILENCE

The winter air cold touches my skin The road with no crowded people The birds flying away The red roses displayed And when I touch my finger bleed So I drop my blood in the water I see the Christmas lights sparkle The branches with snows on My hair flaws when the wind breezes I sit on a bench alone I started to write my love poems My silence...

SAD DECEMBER

Another December without you I hold my warm coffee Sitting outside my house Dreaming you came. I miss your voice I miss your smile And that moments for a while I miss your touch I miss your hugs And that moments for a while I miss your kiss I miss your three words And that moments for a while I miss how we walk under that street light I miss how we slowly dance And that moments for a while

MAYBE I'M AFRAID

Maybe I'm afraid so I would not see, The dusk-colored sight you gazed for me to see. Maybe I'm afraid so I would not see, Your half-twitched smile though it's plain to see. Ah, pretensions! when will you learn to be gentle? The eyes never had the same sparkle....Maybe I'm afraid so I would not feel, The icy-cold touch you reach for me to feel. Maybe I'm afraid so I would not feel, The freezing wintry kiss you gave but I feel. Sentimental songs need not care whose heart it gonna break. So I'll carry the hurt for as long as it takes!

Haikus

Bright, yet beautiful Light fills the room with a glow, Almost like Heaven. Autumn shaded leaves Fall gracefully to the ground, Lighter than laughter. The constant burn of The sun, lingers on your skin More stable than love. A winter wind blows Snow, across a field of black Like our differences. A hard rain falls down, Causing a pool to ripple Like problems we face. Poised, and elegant
