two days ago i invited everyone to lunch
because god i miss that warmth and buzz in the air
two hours ago i canceled while faking a cough
because god i just wanna be alone
i carved into my skin
hoping i could take their wounds on
as mine
you tell me your secrets
and all i say back are lies
the prompt stared at me big and bold
random letters on a thin sheet of paper
small and inconsequential
"What do you want to be different in your life in five years? How would you change it?"
normally i bullshit my way through these essays
basic cookie-cutter answers guaranteed every year
that deflect what's really in my
soul
but this time i was honest with myself
and strangers who'd never really know me
bound by anonymity
my mother found it in the mail
re-sent with a letter of congratulations
and i spent that night
bruised and scolded
reminded once again that feelings are meant to be buried deep down
every picture and note and smashed bottle cap
was thrown into a box hidden beneath my bed
behind shoes and blankets and laundry
so that i'd never have to look at it again
but i can feel it through my mattress
trying to seep back in my soul
so i think i'll shove some more crap under there
those sheets i meant to throw away
a rotting apple core
a notebook or two
and more and more and moreandmoreandmore
they start out as red
then purple and black and green and yellow
until that sickening, infested color
seeps back into your skin
and disappears
you poor thing
let me hold you as you cry
let me soothe you as you die
you infinitely awful
infinitely suffering
thing
in the dead of night
under a black-blue-purple sky
she ripped me away from my home
the only thing i ever knew
she smothered me with her shirt to stop the cries
bound my hands to end my desperate scratches
held up that ragged rabbit i kept beside my bed
and told me i was safe
that she was my hero
no matter what anyone else said
i spent hours sweeping last night
but my bare feet are still being cut by glass
hidden under the stove
and the peeling tile
and the kitchen table
and the dark corners of the fridge
and the carpet two rooms away
i guess i really can't do anything right
life goes by in a blur in this hole.
straight past the sunshine, the garden,
the love,
the light.
the abyss is all you know.
it was only a smile, nothing more.
it didn't make everything all right.
it didn't put food on the table or protect them when i couldn't.
it didn't open her eyes or heal her heart.
it didn't stop me from crying in the bathroom or hating everything.
it didn't make the pain disappear.
it was only a smile, a tiny thing.
so why did twitching a few muscles convince people i was fine?
i screamed at the stars
and cried in the rain,
breaking my nails
as i tried to claw the broken thing out
of my chest.
but it didn't do any good.
it never will
because the broken isn't in me.
