The Tree — Summary

Balachandran VTrivandrum, 06-10-2010Sad

Above, the sky was a bright blue Clouds, white, swum lazily Sun shone bright Breeze blew gentle.

Atop the tree, on the highest branch A new leaf, slender and green Soaked in the sun and danced in the air. Other leaves wished how they could be At the top, at the very top.

Humming happily to itself, the leaf, Humming happily to itself Nothing above me But the empty, vast sky!

Trembling in glee, the flower buds Blushed, Dreaming of the bees And the fruits they will bear.

The branches huddled, Gravely discussing the season The weather, how stronger and longer They should grow; They had their targets to meet.

The bark of the trunk, bit worried Wondered how to tackle The rise in termites The whims of the woodpeckers And the nuisance of squirrels Nibbling the bark just for fun.

Beneath the soil Matters had taken a worse turn The roots were in confusion And fear Of the fickle rains And the hard rocks deeper.

Birds flew, wind blew Sun set and the moon rose.

In the dark As the owl hooted As bats erupted in and out The tree sighed For it knew It was its last night.

The poem follows one tree through a single day, giving each part its own small personality and worry. The new leaf at the top is giddy with pride, humming that nothing sits above it. The flower buds blush and dream of bees and fruit. The branches talk like managers, worrying about growth "targets," while the bark frets over termites, woodpeckers and squirrels. Down below, the roots fear fickle rain and hard rock.

The tone is gentle and gently funny at first, since the tree's parts sound like people with office-style concerns. Everyone is busy planning a future. Then the poem quietly shifts. Day turns to night, the owl hooted and the bats come and go, and the tree sighs because it knows it is its last night.

The ending carries the feeling. Nothing explains why the tree will die, and that silence makes it sadder. The poem suggests how much of life goes on in hopes and small anxieties, with the end arriving unannounced.

The Flower and the Butterfly

Pause awhile, butterfly, Alight here, on this wilting Rose. Young flowers, I know, are beckoning you, But stay with me, just for a while
