Rozniecki's poem is about an unreliable friend, the "flake" of the title, who drifts in and out of the speaker's life. The opening contradictions, "So close, / So far away," "Ubiquitous, / Non-existent," set up the push and pull. The speaker enjoys the warmth and easy chemistry when the friend does reach out, but the calls usually go unanswered, and the friendship runs on the other person's terms: "Until you decide otherwise."
The title is a pun. A "flake" is someone who bails on plans, but it is also a snowflake, and the final stanza leans into that image. The friend falls slowly from the sky, and the speaker is unsure whether they will "freeze or melt." Eventually the friend is "plowed" away like snow from a road.
The mood moves from wistful hope to frustration, then to cold resignation. The last line is blunt: the speaker is finished and doesn't want to see this person again.
