If you lived in the depth of the sea would you seek the earth's ground If you flow in sky would you dream of the sea If you sleep in the ground would you miss the sky?

Nobody who lives in the sea, the poem suggests, can stay quiet about the sky. Signed only with the username fangirl131311, "Content" gives us nothing to lean on except its own six lines, and they turn out to be enough. Three questions, each opening with "If you," set one place against another: the sea against the ground, the sky against the sea, the ground against the sky. Follow the pairings and a loop appears. The one who lives in the sea looks to the ground, the one in the ground looks to the sky, and the one in the sky dreams of the sea. No place is the end of the journey. Each is both a home and something missed.

The construction makes this loop visible. There is no rhyme in the usual sense, but the line endings run sea, ground, sky, sea, ground, sky, the same three words in the same order, twice. Repetition does the work of rhyme and creates the same expectation. By the fourth line the ear is already waiting for "ground" and then "sky," so the reader feels the circle closing before working it out. A poem about wanting that never settles is trapped, quite literally, in its own pattern.

The punctuation adds to this. There are no commas or full stops, and the only mark is the question mark at the very end. The three questions blur into one long wondering that is not allowed to rest until the last word. The rhythm is loose free verse with a gentle, rocking lilt. The opening line is the longest and most rolling, "If you lived in the depth of the sea," and the lines then shorten to "If you flow in sky" and "would you miss the sky?" Judging by the sound alone, the poem seems to thin out as it rises toward the air.

The verbs are carefully graded. To "seek" is to go looking, an act of will. To "dream of" something is to hold it at a distance, in imagination. To "miss" something usually means you have known it, so the final question carries the most feeling. It hints that the sleeper in the ground once knew the sky. There is also a small shift in tense. The first question is a distant hypothetical ("If you lived"), while the next two are in the present ("If you flow," "If you sleep"). The effect, perhaps, is that the reader is pulled out of make-believe and into the situation itself.

The imagery is spare but does a lot. "Depth" suggests weight, pressure and dark water. "Flow in sky" borrows a verb that belongs to water, so the sky becomes a kind of sea and the borders between the elements start to dissolve. That undercuts the neat separation the poem seems to set up, as if all three places were versions of one another and the longing were for a change rather than for any particular destination. "Sleep in the ground" is the most open phrase. It could mean rest, or burial, or a seed waiting under soil, and the poem does not choose.

The title adds another layer. "Content" can be said two ways: CONtent, the thing a container holds, or conTENT, meaning satisfied. The word never appears in the lines, but both readings fit. The sea, the sky and the ground each hold a life, and each question tests whether that life can ever feel like enough. The poem refuses to answer. Because it speaks directly to "you," it hands the question to the reader, who can fill it with anything from a hometown to a different future.

What makes the poem worth reading is that its shape and its idea are the same thing. It argues, through a repeating pattern that never breaks, that contentment is slippery, and it does so without a single statement or lesson. In six short lines it turns an old human restlessness into something the reader can hear and feel, and then it leaves the answer open.
