Three short questions, each asking the same thing in a different setting. If you lived in the deep sea, would you long for solid ground? If you drifted through the sky, would you dream of the ocean? If you slept in the earth, would you miss the air above? Each creature, or each state of being, is placed in one element and then asked to imagine another.
The title, "Content," is the key. It can mean satisfied, and the poem seems to test that idea. The questions never get answers, so the speaker leaves us to decide whether anyone can truly be happy where they are, or whether we always look toward somewhere else.
The mood is quiet, curious and a little wistful. The elements seem to pass into one another in a loop: sea, earth, sky. That circle suggests longing never really settles, though the poem keeps it gentle rather than sad.
