You Cannot Live On Words Alone

Jessea L. VaughanContemplative

Unless you are dust in the wind, For that's all words are good for After their meaning Has been forgotten. You cannot expect To dine on promises, For they provide no nourishment. All they can give you Is a momentary sense of security And a temporary feeling Of trust in the other person. And this only lasts Until they have either been Fulfilled or swept out Into the sea Of events forgotten And phrases left unsaid And past dreams left to wither. You cannot hope to obtain energy Simply from the memories You have of events decades past Of which you are quite fond, For they cannot give you the strength To survive a day or hour You cannot simply make a meal Of doubts and insecurities. Such things cannot be consumed In lieu of dinner. Such things can only gnaw on happiness Until you are simply A sad starving shell Of the person you could have become. And how can you rely Upon a diet of dialogues, Descriptions, Delusions, And declarations? Such things are fine on paper Or in a conversation But they cannot be used As a substitute For food and water. Though you wish you could, You cannot live on words alone.
