I saw the fog grow thick,
Which soon made blind my ken;
It made tall men of boys,
And giants of tall men.
It clutched my throat, I coughed;
Nothing was in my head
Except two heavy eyes
Like balls of burning lead.
And when it grew so black
That I could know no place,
I lost all judgment then,
Of distance and of space.
The street lamps, and the lights
Upon the halted cars,
Could either be on earth
Or be the heavenly stars.
God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;
He plants His footsteps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm.
Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never-failing skill,
He treasures up His bright designs,
And works His sovereign will.
Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take,
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy, and shall break
In blessings on your head.
Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust Him for His grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.
Trusty as the stars
Who quit their shining working
Prompt as when I lit them
In Genesis' new house,
Durable as dawn
Whose antiquated blossom
Makes a world's suspense
Perish and rejoice.
Rearrange a "Wife's" affection!
When they dislocate my Brain!
Amputate my freckled Bosom!
Make me bearded like a man!
Blush, my spirit, in thy Fastness --
Blush, my unacknowledged clay --
Seven years of troth have taught thee
More than Wifehood every may!
Love that never leaped its socket --
Trust entrenched in narrow pain --
Constancy thro' fire -- awarded --
Anguish -- bare of anodyne!
Burden -- borne so far triumphant --
None suspect me of the crown,
For I wear the "Thorns" till Sunset --
Then -- my Diadem put on.
O thou Most High who rulest all
And hear'st the prayers of thine,
O hearken, Lord, unto my suit
And my petition sign.
Into Thy everlasting arms Of mercy
I commend Thy servant, Lord.
Keep and preserve My husband,
my dear friend.
At Thy command, O Lord, he went,
Nor nought could keep him back.
Then let Thy promise joy his heart,
O help and be not slack.
Uphold my heart in Thee, O God.
Thou art my strength and stay,
Thou see'st how weak and frail I am,
Hide not Thy face away.
who to trust or listen to
where to consult
prisoners whisper publicly
like water in the night
after a little music
my thoughts differ
like pointing at a sword
or coming to France to protest
capable of great trust
no false parts ever hold
The dog all afternoon
is master of the yard.
I play with
his trust, troubled
by love as art.
I went among others
to be mended. But
their beautiful company
showed me an old bag—
my ill condition. Nobody
could make me desire to be.
I do not know
the trick of trust.
When we say we love something,
What do we really mean?
Did you mean that 'I love you'
You told your girlfriend,
Your boyfriend,
Your partner?
Or was it just a greeting,
A farewell?
When I say that I love you,
I say it with all my heart.
All my soul.
Because when I love,
I don't do it lightly.
I love you,
All the way,
Or not at all.
"Trust me"
He says into the night
Trust?
Trust is such an odd concept
It can take longer then you'd ever believe to attain
And it can vanish in one moment.
Misplaced trust can lead to broken souls
And heart wrench.
In the first blossom of youth
It can be given away freely
And given back just as quickly.
Lives can depend on it.
It can be very slippery in your hands,
And there is no real reason for it.
So, will I trust him?
"Yes"
I connect the dots between the words you say to me
And what you actually mean.
