Logan Brosemer's poem is about lying awake while the mind refuses to rest. The speaker is stuck in a loop of old memories, imagined conversations, and "what ifs" that play out in the worst possible ways. The violent image of thoughts "smashing the inside of my skull" shows how exhausting and unwelcome this feels.
Midway through, the poem shifts from the speaker's own mind to someone else: "she." The speaker wonders if she is awake too, or finally sleeping peacefully. The thoughts seem to center on something unsaid between them, and the speaker believes that saying it aloud might bring relief. But waiting only feeds the wondering, and not knowing creates even more thoughts.
The mood is anxious, tired, and quietly desperate. The poem ends by repeating its opening question, which leaves the reader in the same unbroken loop the speaker is trapped in, with no answer in sight.
