Deadly Alive — Summary

Fell in ditches, rose, fell,... then you came...picked me, held me, raised my esteem, replenished my pride...then I hit the ground hard on my face only to see you laughing at my fall...

It all happened when we first met at the sacred junction, Where you ripped me apart, And ventured into my deeper self You whispered words of possession, Which now sounds like bloody torture

You kissed my head off a dozen times, Which now feels like deep, nasty knife stab You slid your tongue through my spine Which now feels like I've been cut open You captured the very thing that keeps me alive,

Now, I'm dead... but my mind is still wandering... Now I know I'm dead...

Written by MaHaMo1, "Deadly Alive" tells of a person who was already low, falling and rising again, until someone arrives and seems to rescue them. This person lifts the speaker up and restores their pride, only to drop them and laugh at the fall. The sudden reversal is the heart of the poem.

The speaker looks back at the first meeting, the "sacred junction," and sees how tender moments have turned into wounds. Whispered words of possession now sound like torture, kisses feel like knife stabs, and a touch along the spine feels like being cut open. The same actions are remembered with new, painful meaning. The lover took "the very thing that keeps me alive," which suggests the speaker's heart, or perhaps their sense of self.

The mood is raw, bitter, and numb. By the end the speaker declares themselves dead, yet the mind keeps wandering, so the title fits: they are alive only in the sense of still feeling the pain.
