Ruined — Summary

Let me tell you a story About a boy and girl Madly in love and happy as could be Or at least that's what it seemed Or did it? All of their friends and family new that a storm was coming The arguing, the fighting, the torment It was only a matter of time Everyone knew what was about to happen Except the girl Clueless and in love She waited for him to come home To kiss him lovingly and tell him how she had missed him But he never showed 2 AM and she hadn't heard from him She began to panic and lose control 3 AM and still no call She's having a panic attack now Calling emergency rooms to see if something had happened 6 AM Finally he calls Her chest was tight, her eyes burning from the tears that streamed down her face She couldn't breathe She couldn't speak 87 missed calls, because what is a terrified wife to do except call Do not tell me it was an accident that you missed all those calls Do not tell me how sorry you are because of what you did You knew exactly what you were doing and continued to do for months after that night Pulling me along on a string Like a toy for a child You broke this toy beyond repair And you feel no remorse for it You used me and manipulated me You took my fragile heart and shattered it I thought about killing myself so many of those nights So many of those hellish nights Sitting alone in the dark In a big empty bed Wondering what I did wrong But, I learned something That even though I made my mistakes You were the one to blame for this You were the arson holding the matches The murderer with the knife in your hands The girl died that day Left with nothing but a husk of the person that used to live in this body You ruined her And you have nothing to say for it Now, you have a new girl And I pray for her Because she thinks you're great But I know the truth

Neko Belle's "Ruined" is told by a woman looking back on the end of her marriage. It begins like a story, with a happy couple who may not have been so happy, and then moves into one terrible night. She waits for her husband, panics as the hours pass, calls emergency rooms, and finally hears from him at 6 AM. The detail of 87 missed calls shows how desperate she was.

Halfway through, the speaker stops telling the story and speaks directly to him. Her tone turns bitter and accusing. She says he manipulated her, treated her like a toy, and left her thinking about suicide on lonely nights. The images of an arsonist and a murderer show how completely she blames him.

The mood is raw and heavy, but it ends with a kind of hard-won clarity. She feels the old version of herself is gone, and she prays for his new partner, who doesn't yet know what she knows.

I am/I am not

Here is a list of things I am and I am not: -I am beautiful, but I am not conceited. -I am funny, but I am not a braggart. -I am shy, but I am not timid.
