Olivia Taylor's "Unanswered Questions" is built almost entirely from questions, and that is the whole point. The speaker is in a relationship, or a close bond, where nothing feels certain. Each line starts with "if" and ends in a worry: can I trust you, are you really with me, would you leave? Even the simple acts of seeing and hearing someone come with doubt, as if being near the person doesn't mean being connected to them.
The repeated pattern makes the speaker sound stuck, running the same anxious thoughts in a loop. Then the poem shifts. "Feels so different, / Feels so distant" drops the questions and states a sadness plainly. The last two lines are the most painful: the speaker tries to help and gets "pushed away." The mood is lonely, tense, and quietly hurt. Because the questions are never answered, the poem leaves us in the same uncertainty the speaker feels.
