Delirium — Poem analysis

sammyAnxious

Violent emotions Crash into me like Waves from the ocean.

My rage turns into Shiny writing fits That lead to Exhausted hands And tired eyes.

This happens almost Every night And lasts until 4 am Or as long as this Delirium lasts.

Before the poem has told us anything else, it has already knocked its speaker over. "Violent emotions / Crash into me like / Waves from the ocean": the grammar makes the speaker the one who is hit, not the one who acts. That small detail sets up what «Delirium» is really about, a nightly cycle in which feeling arrives uninvited, gets hammered into writing, and leaves the writer worn out. Its central idea is that writing can help you survive an emotional storm without ever ending it. The poem offers no cure, only a routine.

Watch what happens to the pronouns. In the first stanza it is "me," the target. In the second it is "My rage," and the feeling now belongs to the speaker and does something: it "turns into" writing. By the last stanza the speaker has vanished altogether: "This happens almost / Every night." There is no I, no me, only an event, as impersonal as weather or tide. Reading down the page, we move from being struck, to taking ownership, to being absorbed into a routine so familiar it needs no subject.

The wave simile is the poem's only extended image, and it is a familiar one, but the familiarity suits it. Waves come in sets, again and again, which quietly prepares the "almost / Every night" of the ending. There is also a sound-echo: "emotions" and "ocean" close on nearly the same sound, so the feeling and its image almost rhyme. The stranger image comes next: "Shiny writing fits." Rage is a dark word, and "shiny" is an unexpected thing for it to become. It might suggest that the writing glints with value, or the glassy, feverish brightness of an overtired mind at night. "Fits" is just as double-edged. It means bursts of activity, but it also borrows from illness and tantrums, suggesting something the writer cannot fully control. The poem lets both readings stand.

The form is plain. There is no rhyme and no regular meter, and the lines are very short, often three or four syllables. Many end on small, unfinished words: "like," "into," "to," "until," "this." You have to jump to the next line to complete the thought, which creates a pulling-forward motion, like water drawn back before the next wave. The stanzas also grow, from three lines to five to six. The poem lengthens as the night does, and the final stanza seems to run on past the point where you expect it to stop.

The plain language carries a lot. In "Exhausted hands / And tired eyes," the body parts, not the person, bear the cost, and the slide from "exhausted" down to the milder "tired" feels like energy draining out of the line itself. "4 am" is the only precise detail, a hard clock-time in a poem about feeling that will not behave. The next lines undercut it: "Or as long as this / Delirium lasts." There are two clocks here, the one on the wall and the one inside the speaker, and the inner one wins. "Lasts" appears twice, and the poem finishes on its own title word. It ends where it began, a loop with no exit.

What makes the poem worth reading is its honesty and restraint. After one big simile, it refuses to dramatise and simply reports. "Delirium" usually means confusion, fever, a loss of control, yet this speaker is lucid enough to count the hours and name the toll on hands and eyes. The poem itself reads like something such a night might produce: short, urgent, unpolished, unresolved. It suggests that feeling too big for the daytime can find a shape at night, even when that shape brings tiredness rather than peace.
