Q.R. Quasar imagines the universe speaking as an "I", looking back on its own beginning. The opening lines treat the Big Bang as something that happened "a mere moment ago", which shrinks billions of years into a single memory. The speaker recalls the first ball of fire, the fire spreading across space, and the slow cooling into new forms.
The poem's central trick is to blend cosmic and watery images. Early matter becomes a struggle to surface, with the speaker "clawing for the air of radiance", like a swimmer close to drowning. That desperate, breathless energy gives the middle of the poem its urgency. By the end the panic has eased: the drowning "comes only in spasms," and the speaker has "broken through." The final line, "I, Ocean, swim in my own light," feels triumphant and calm. The mood moves from chaos and strain to wonder and quiet pride, as if the universe has finally learned to be at home in itself.
