my sister can't look at me without flinching
because the little girl was never saved
from the torment
despite my pleading promises.
we both, wanted, to be headless mannequins
searching for ways to silence the noise upstairs
while the remainder of the body
did what the body does.
we wanted the mind
to wash the hands
while the hands
did what hands do.
maybe as kids
every print our feet made
was something inconceivable,
but eventually we saw wrinkles,
and the road not taken
already had hand-printed cement,
gum-stuck in the underneaths,
and what’s the point in walking
Trusting of your protection,
Trusting of your care,
There to look after me,
When my parents are away,
There to make sure I’m safe,
Make sure I eat,
Make sure I do my homework,
Make sure I sleep,
My friend,
My guardian,
My neighbor,
My babysitter,
Silence then fills the room,
A bitter cold enters,
Darkness rapidly pervades,
About to lose my innocence,
Not a day goes by when I don't remember you
I remember when I was younger
I questioned your scars
I didn't know much
But I knew at one point they must have hurt
I remember when you were Santa,
And I told everyone you weren't really him
I caused so much trouble - and they all cried
But you still took me in your arms
As If I'd done nothing wrong
I remember you teaching me to kick a football
You were the only one who could.
And the stories of the different footballers,
You had said you helped with their sore muscles.
I remember When I was losing on of my first teeth
You showed me how it could wiggle
Focus. Flashlight. Snapshot.
Life treats us unkind,
we all suffer from no might,
there's no escape... no, there's not.
Hiding and seeking,
playing games when we were young,
showing each other tongues;
When our eyes should be shut, we were peeking.
When we should be peeking, our eyes are now shut,
our tongues have changed into fingers,
that magical feeling that lingers
is gone with lots of hiding, yet no seeking. Cut.
Was rough
I was teased
I was raped
I was pregnant
I was made fun of
I was left out
I was trouble in school
I was abused by alot of men
I was handcuffed a few times
I was never arrested
I never had any friends
I went to a special needs school
I had fights everyday
I had a miscarriage
I lost alot of loved ones
I had alot going on
I looked forward to every other Friday
Like it was a holiday made just for me
But it seemed like everyone was
Just a little to busy to celebrate it
"It's alright," Mama would say.
"You can go visit next time."
But the promises she made were just
As hurtful as the ones he broke
And even though I knew better
I would choose to swallow the lies
Because lies give you hope
Lies give you a reason to believe
Then your weekend came along
(They always called it your
Weekend, as if you'd paid for it
And therefore owned it)
When I was your child I learned
The saltiness of my own tears, I knew
Which hours of the day
And night
We're best for me to be invisible
The answer was all of them
And so I became invisible, the best
I could, but somehow I would always find a way
To instigate and provoke
I was just a blip on the radar with
A thousand other blips
I must have been the biggest one
Or the smallest, because I could never
Quite hide well enough to stay unseen
I was different
In some unfathomable fashion
l looked at a picture of us
You had the most breathtaking smile
What happened to the little girl
that dreamed the impossible
That would hide behind mum
when she was shy
You don't smile much anymore
and the things that do make you smile
aren't who you really are
I miss that little girl
that believed in herself
that thought she could do anything
l'm sorry that I couldn't protect you
From a world that broke your heart
I just want to see you
smile like you used to
I apologize too much
They say
I don't need to explain myself
They say
It's not your fault
They act this way
In truth
I know
But my mind
Doesn't think so
I was raised
To apologize for everything
There is no changing that
I just wish
You would understand
That bad habits are hard to break
an hour
after summer equinox
breviaries
bell tone of vespers
two children swimming
among ten thousand salmon
teach the children
how to catch fish
with their hands
that
any trout
interested in taking chances
will kiss their fingers
that
in a summer solstice
bees land on their nose
i look out for myself like a cushion
run over by a taxicab in a rain forest
the sky forming the top half of a sandwich
of radiation and gooseflesh hung up on poles to dry
all this is because an angel tripped over
a roller skate i left on the front porch of my childhood
where always the metallic savor of bees kept
boring a hole in the crucifix
i slept in my alternate selves until i got hungry
i measured the span between hunger and sunday dinner
the distance was overwhelming and full of fish
i turned on the radio and got caught up in emotions
but the strange thing is whatever i heard
seemed realer on the inside than the outside
i imagined the ground was racing to stay in one place
