in the dark street two women
carry a coffin between them
in my dark thought
no god is present
in the dark O touch and see
a music without rules
gone so soon I see him ill still
in that delirium
his talk like fine lace
his discourse on Peak Oil and empire
making all imaginable
as an old man’s hair
dark and light took him
by appointment
and he answered saying
that he was not his weaknesses
like a heart
in a cook’s sack,
sitting in an ill place
in the dark.
Out of the old coal hole,
new and clean
at 3:00 o’clock
the colliers see in the dark,
garden some ill wood
and believe in little.
in a house without power
the sound of the wind
appliances have stopped humming
chargers no longer glow
the masks on my walls stare
steadfastly into the darkness
i offer myself again
on the altar of sleep
the classical hides
within the vernacular
like a clutch of eggs
wood-winded
or unreedable
all flesh is brass
shivery
with bowed strings
and ceremonious mallets
an attenuated conductor
bobs in the dark mirror
of a piano
a piccolo shrieks
like a rabbit
caught by an owl
clarinets
Dear
ground,
thank you for
always being there
for us. In my dreams,
sometimes you aren’t and
I go on falling until I wake.
Thank you for letting us sleep.
Thank you for your enormous
reserves of darkness, which
we have been burning to
keep the darkness at
bay, ashes to ashes.
Thank you for
letting us
all fall

A crane in a scrap metal yard
unclenches a great, magnetic claw.
Breast-shaped mounds of soil
sit two fields away from the pit,
a future fish pond.
Gulls glean in the plow’s dark wake.
A large, white dog follows
two boys along a dry creek
while we in our fast train
hurtle backwards over the sleepers
in their gravel beds.

A signal goes out
& we creep slowly through the night
so the driver can inspect the track.
As long as the lights
stay on, we’re stuck.
You can’t sprout wings
or rake me with sudden claws.
I can’t turn into
a storm-tossed tree
or an otter slippery as sin.
In the light, we are
smaller than life.
Our cries are nothing
but failed words
& our sighs & gasps
might just as well
have been emitted by some
tired engine.
Light always wants
The little voices in my head
Remind me daily that I should be dead
The little whispers say I'm just biding time
With a life that's no longer mine
Memories I've tried to forget
Hardly ever resurface, I have no regret
A past that dark doesn't deserve to live
Fuck anyone who says to forgive
These little voices know me the very best
We've been through it all and beat every test
The devil even wonders why he can't claim me
But you can't reclaim something that's already yours, you see
A dark little plague that walks this Earth
I was cursed upon the day of my birth
The scars I have they come so readily
The fate I have rests just as heavily
You don’t know-
But I am still around.
Whirl around – but
You wouldn’t see me- yet.
Walk on, in blinding light
Or in comforting dark –
But – listen! My footfalls
Crushing the fallen leaves.
You don’t feel-
But smell – the breeze
The flowers carrying
My sweat pungent.
Sing on, gay, heart light
Let hair swirl over your face
But - listen! My voice
Rising over the winds.
The darkness is filled with wonderful things, that people who sleep cannot see.
