miscarriage—
a life-like lack of heart
in the court
night turns soft
as a leather strop
under the stars’ fuzzy lights
florescent incandescent
my surgery proceeds
with fewer instruments
train whistle
a black dog’s bark
a meteor’s incision takes
a second to heal
though the open heart
always misses its cage
a nameless fear approaches
the crickets fall silent
i hear thin things
like teeth chattering
a heart thudding against
its slaughterhouse pen
my caught breath
turns tenuous as a frayed rope
i hear myself saying go on
you don’t exist yet
oh future
voracious as a vacuum
my own appetites have changed
i can count my ribs
what else would you have
me consume
heart carried in a basket
lest it should break
or ease my burial
we are displacing ourselves with money
we close hands and continue
as factions
against the children
against one another
and away to bed
A ripe sweet pepper
may look like a heart
but is really more like
a lung—full of naught.
Often enough, its seedy knob
has already begun to rot.
It isn’t any sort of pump,
nor does its plumpness come
from love’s leaven.
Most damning of all:
despite being red, and a pepper,
it is not hot.
every chapter i start
i try not to think of you
try to help my heart
but i need someone to speak to
every new chapter in my life
you shouldn't be in
we'd make such strife
the next chapter
you won't be in
at least i'll try
and avoid my lie
Your were like ice in the summer;
Your body was warm,
Hot even,
Burning, tingling at touch.
Keeping me warm too.
Your heart was cold,
Alone in the dark,
Frozen still.
Cracking like ice.
You were like fresh waves crashing on hot sand,
Refreshing but not new.
You weren't ice cream melting in the sun,
Not annoying.
You were ice in the summer,
Common, regular, but different.
Needed and wanted.
speaking lies again
breaking hearts again
walking past again
never noticing
cry
never even noticing
'bye'
would you notice then?
He ignores you,
Yet you like him.
He does nothing,
Yet you fall for him.
He never speaks to you,
Yet you dream of him.
He doesn't think of you,
Yet you've given your heart to him?
Dear heart,
Why,
Why the asshole,
Who doesn't respect my feelings,
Gets more than half my heart,
Why does the guy,
Who has everything I am,
Have to be a jerk,
And throw me around,
Why do I have to care,
I know that I didn't choose him,
But you did,
You chose him,
There's always the first guy,
They're the first try,
At love,
But then they're the first lie,
And after that comes the first goodbye,
And don't forget the broken heart,
The reminisce of your storm still shook
In my soul,
But I learned to take shelter
In my own heart.
