like a day-long dinner
were we a meal
home is a bed
after we shed
waterway so close
I long for it
to open the whole
of me to me
what was not called home
back home
off and on
home and office
busy till night met my eyes
little home
the eyeprints of love
all too big
no home where
I find my home
and a well
of ice
I sing to myself
rather than go home
with grief
o my war horse
the way turned
into more convenience
the night’s mouth being sealed
I kiss the void that I might
not go mad
the most humble nothing
must be spared
and wild
like the first day
with God in that no
home place
I am no one
and I am going
to live
the wren might suspect
I am finished with elsewhere
and home I find
somewhat sour
being there so often
at the end of the road
too late to get
her silent way
mirth and words alter
who I find within
my heart beginning to falsify
what I have done
like moving to a different home
and a hard bed
footself
or waterself
no other home
my ordinary hours
as keeper of a place
come to question me
Inside the body
of sleep, each thinking
we are alone & surrounded
by wholly private visions,
failing to recognize
the animal whose footfalls
we hear in place of our own,
touching what we take
for a wall where there are only
other fingers, other skins,
& waking to the smell of heat
on a cool morning in early
summer: I’ve turned into
a tourist in my own life.
I carry a camera from room
to room, alert for any irruption
a penny signifies the world
we would not miss
a sorry playhouse home
having so little
that emptiness is
a seeming great sea
