She was poetry
in a world
which was still learning the
Alphabet
She glides
In grey and worn red
Alone in her height and
With her silence
Untouched
Touching me.
So old in her smile,
Defined for years by
A confectionary fall
By the open wound now
Of a sister
Her world
Where I have separated bangs
And my name is Judy.
where the turns of your
rocks despoil the sea
weary with that mating
you lie dulled by
separation with
your face lined tentative
not from age but squinting
at the sun
mountain your glance is
nondescript for I cannot
spell your silence
nor will I match my
gestures dumb to yours
when motion is
patient and I must
be in my seeking
there is a
loaf of datenut bread on the table,
wrapped in waxed paper, a rubber band
around it. a fat man
comes in & out of the back room in his shorts.
the silence is noticiable. i mean, to one
who has lived for four yrs in apartments
facing on a courtyard where they shout
day & night, the silence is noticeable.
the children i am watching are asleep,
the doorbell will ring any minute,
i skim along, typing a libretto
by kenneth koch; avoiding detailed observation
of my emotional state (sic),
the i ching says
that the superior man knows the changes
and sometimes what the world needs
is a bit of silence
to remind society
what monsters
we've become
It's too quiet here.
Come closer.
You can't hear me cry.
Come closer,
you can't see my dreams all die
from where you're standing on your own.
It's too quiet here.
you promised-
then, weeks later, when i fell
you smiled maliciously and said "broken promises are the best kind"
'broken hearts hurt the worst'
its too quiet here.
i feel so cold-
relief exists though.
when i am cut.
crippled anger,
They say I'm too closed off but close me off when I try to speak about anything
I was told to be silent but my mind isn't quiet yet.
After years of waiting we finally meet, and I couldn't utter a single word.
I overdosed silence for so long that when you asked me, my tongue was numb!
You said "I don't care"
Then why do you bother yourself to let me know that.
You cared enough.
Suddenly, I started speaking his language
in the quietness; I was never again misunderstood.
Silence is my mother tongue.
I fluently speak it, but I never understood a word of it.
