LONER III

Maybe one day Somebody will look at me Like I am the sun that their world revolves around. But until then, I will remain as cool And as distant as the moon.

A Hillside Thaw

To think to know the country and not know The hillside on the day the sun lets go Ten million silver lizards out of snow! As often as I’ve seen it done before I can’t pretend to tell the way it’s done. It looks as if some magic of the sun Lifted the rug that bred them on the floor And the light breaking on them made them run. But if I thought to stop the wet stampede, And caught one silver lizard by the tail, And put my foot on one without avail, And threw myself wet-elbowed and wet-kneed In front of twenty others’ wriggling speed,-- In the confusion of them all aglitter, And birds that joined in the excited fun By doubling and redoubling song and twitter,

Midsummer Morn

A tom-tom sun awakens day's jungle with heat beats The moon was a white war canoe moored to the night Morning stars scurry to cover like shaking hares fearful of the Great Yellow Hunter Last night's tall hunchback fishing in a pool of raven's breasts is a green elm tree Thin wings of grass pound helplessly against hard ground And the robins are no longer afraid . . .

Impression, Sunrise

Confusion simplifies: sun’s a red dot in murk, boat’s a black patch on murk, just a spill of red light lets seeing tell a difference between one murk and another. It’s all a seeming in which morning looks as vague as thoughts or the other way around, and blended seemings compose a soup which eyes will taste as light, air, water. A painter makes one moist concoction seem like another, and we look at what seems to have been seen

Zephyr

Zephyr comes unaware, And sings underneath my arms : When it makes a sudden stop, I will finish the song of its wandering soul. Zephyr comes like a Beauty Underneath my arms smiling, smiling. She looks upon me, and says : " Shall we hide us from birds and men under the roses ? " Zephyr comes with doleful heart, Sighing, sighing, underneath my arms. I whisper a tale of a Life of Gold, We fly into the Palace of the Sun.

Sic Vita

Heart free, hand free, Blue above, brown under, All the world to me Is a place of wonder. Sun shine, moon shine, Stars, and winds a-blowing, All into this heart of mine Flowing, flowing, flowing! Mind free, step free, Days to follow after, Joys of life sold to me For the price of laughter. Girl's love, man's love, Love of work and duty, Just a will of God's to prove Beauty, beauty, beauty!

The Close of Day

“To meet and then to part,” and that is all, To slowly turn an album’s crusty leaves, To see the faces and the scenes recall, Are things that in a lifetime one achieves. To wander down a broad-arch gallery, Viewing the scenes from life on either side, Pressed forward with the force of years to see But part of every picture when espied. The big sun in its blue dome keeps its course, Without a falter moves upon its way. So human life, returning to its source, Is overtaken by the close of day. To dream, and being rudely waked from thought, Return to peaceful dreaming dearly bought.
