anger is building an office in my chest
out of lies and quandary
whether to burn
or to sleep with a troubled word
for days I have thought
how to get money
to borrow money
son of my money
a rose is a rogue
for money
words dissolve into mist and I must
pay money to eat
get money
who first mortally wounded thought
who hurt words
but not the body
who had a mind to turn
love to doubt
I hear the first words die
with a strange turn
into thin ear.
The common years we were merry in
go cold—prayers
to be mulled.
Back when I smoked, as the son of a writer
& a librarian, the book match
was like a brother to me.
Once torn from the book
it couldn’t go back, while smoking made me
an exile from the air.
We both had a tendency to lose our heads.
I was skinny as a heron’s leg;
a book match isn’t even thick enough
to qualify as a match stick.
It’s a minimal page
with just enough room for one word
beginning with a lower-case L
& ending with incandescence—
a holy word, a profane word,
a word for (forgive me) a kind of match.
I’ve never seen your face,
Nor heard your voice,
Yet feel I know you,
Through your written words,
Having never looked into your eyes,
Nor heard you laugh,
Never have I seen you smile,
Yet are feeling so close,
My imagination illustrates a picture,
Its accuracy unknown,
My mind left to wonder,
Who you really are,
Words typed on a screen,
No expressions or gestures displayed,
No tears or laughs can be seen,
No tone of voice heard,
How much truth in words?
How much fully said
How much wanted to say
How much conveyed
How much understood
How much you want to know?
When truth itself is so limited –
Its all a lie-
LOVE, LIFE, LIE…
I connect the dots between the words you say to me
And what you actually mean.
A shadow,
Embracing,
Mistakes.
A breeze,
Glancing,
A graze.
A drop,
Rivers,
Of tears.
A heart,
Memories,
Fears.
Just words,
Paper,
Threats.
Quiet,
Fourteen words,
the sages say, are all it takes
to win a person’s love —
fourteen words,
which I hope to discover
so that I may speak them
into the mirror.
"Go sell yourself to someone else."
i've forgiven you for saying this, i really truly have.
it was said in a time of anger and spite,
bubbling out of your throat like vomit,
dousing your tongue with bitter regret once they left your mouth.
i understand this better than anyone.
but the words are still branded on my ribs,
following me everywhere i go,
and echoed a hundredfold more than the last second.

i am haunted by these spiteful words that once spilled from your lips
like coughed up blood as it floods your lungs.
how many people have
i
haunted this way?
if i had the words
i would tell you everything.
