But me
They cannot touch,
Old Age and death . . . the strange
And ignominious end of old
Dead folk!
Youth of delight! come hither
And see the opening morn,
Image of Truth new-born.
Doubt is fled, and clouds of reason,
Dark disputes and artful teazing.
Folly is an endless maze;
Tangled roots perplex her ways;
How many have fallen there!
They stumble all night over bones of the dead;
And feel--they know not what but care;
And wish to lead others, when they should be led.
Now the bright morning Star, Dayes harbinger,
Comes dancing from the East, and leads with her
The Flowry May, who from her green lap throws
The yellow Cowslip, and the pale Primrose.
Hail bounteous May that dost inspire
Mirth and youth, and warm desire,
Woods and Groves, are of thy dressing,
Hill and Dale, doth boast thy blessing.
Thus we salute thee with our early Song,
And welcom thee, and wish thee long.
Above the russet clods the corn is seen
Sprouting its spiry points of tender green,
Where squats the hare, to terrors wide awake,
Like some brown clod the harrows failed to break.
Opening their golden caskets to the sun,
The buttercups make schoolboys eager run,
To see who shall be first to pluck the prize--
Up from their hurry see the Skylark flies,
And oer her half-formed nest, with happy wings,
Winnows the air till in the cloud she sings,
Then hangs a dust spot in the sunny skies,
And drops and drops till in her nest she lies,
Which they unheeded passed--not dreaming then
That birds, which flew so high, would drop again
To nests upon the ground, which anything
May come at to destroy. Had they the wing
THERE was a time when this poor frame was whole
And I had youth and never another care,
Or none that should have troubled a strong soul.
Yet, except sometimes in a frosty air
When my heels hammered out a melody
From pavements of a city left behind,
I never would acknowledge my own glee
Because it was less mighty than my mind
Had dreamed of. Since I could not boast of strength
Great as I wished, weakness was all my boast.
I sought yet hated pity till at length
I earned it. Oh, too heavy was the cost.
But now that there is something I could use
My youth and strength for, I deny the age,
The care and weakness that I know--refuse
To admit I am unworthy of the wage
See with what simplicity
This Nimph begins her golden daies!
In the green Grass she loves to lie,
And there with her fair Aspect tames
The Wilder flow'rs, and gives them names:
But only with the Roses playes;
And them does tell
What Colour best becomes them, and what Smell.
Who can foretel for what high cause
This Darling of the Gods was born!
Yet this is She whose chaster Laws
The wanton Love shall one day fear,
And, under her command severe,
See his Bow broke and Ensigns torn.
Happy, who can
Appease this virtuous Enemy of Man!
We were a hit we were pretty
only hands were handsome as we
and we were young
there at night—
easily stirred
and as green as boats.
whole hog
only half roasted
we ate it anyway
tearing off thin strips
the pink muscle
tissue dripped
fluids down
our chins
we savored the char
the crunchy skin
a young man
had just graduated
he imagined the future
as one does at 21
an open road
stretching before him
looking for beechdrops’
nondescript stalks
the road down dips up
hollow or holler?
just ’round the bend
the stream falls away
deepening ravine
trees stretched thin
to reach the sky
musclewood
I was that skinny once
You know,
I've never met anyone like you.
We're supposed to be grown up-
(My family constantly reminds me that I'm anything but)
But you chose to stay young.
Why?
What about your youth was so kind to you?
Was it your parents,
Singing you your song?
Or was it something else?
Did you have a friend tell you
Why they wanted to grow up,
And you decided it wasn't worth it?
What the hell is going on in your mind
When I see you staring at the table like that?
Are you remembering something you love?
"Trust me"
He says into the night
Trust?
Trust is such an odd concept
It can take longer then you'd ever believe to attain
And it can vanish in one moment.
Misplaced trust can lead to broken souls
And heart wrench.
In the first blossom of youth
It can be given away freely
And given back just as quickly.
Lives can depend on it.
It can be very slippery in your hands,
And there is no real reason for it.
So, will I trust him?
"Yes"
I'm broken. I'm scarred.
I've been working myself too hard.
I'm anxious. I'm afraid.
I keep thinking of the mess I've made.
And yet, I keep going.
I've fallen. I've cried.
Everyday, I've lied.
I'm envious. I'm corrupted.
Every time I see myself, I'm disgusted.
And yet, I keep going.
I'm hateful. I'm destructive.
My actions, they're impulsive.
I'm unstable. I'm foolish.
Some might even say I'm ghoulish.
And yet, I keep going.
I'm flawed. That's the truth.
