«the sea used to feel like a void keeping me away…» — Summary

the sea used to feel like a void keeping me away, I realise it's a journey I must take, one to get to you. they say distance is hard and time is a blessing, no. distance isn't hard it is a measure of strength, you need strength to cross that space.. for you I would, I'd run, climb anything... anything to be with you.

you give me a light, a hope. you give me an inspiration to write these words. the nights are long and the days are short with you but every second counts...

every smile and every word fills a void I didn't know I had, you are the first person I think of in the morning and always, always the last person I talk to.

The first time you said you loved me I felt the weight of the world ease, I knew you'd stay by my side and carry that weight with me forever. Forever is an impossible amount of time to measure but I want it with you.

I want the endless smiles and laughing, I want the hard days where we're impossibly homesick for one another, I want the arguments and the tears, I want it all because you are worth the laughter, the distance and the tears.

you are worth all of it and I would give anything for a day with you here, anything to feel your hand in mine and your arms around me... for the first time in a long time this feels real and irreplaceable.

Brittany Allen's untitled poem is a love letter written across a long distance. The speaker begins by changing how she sees the sea. It once felt like an empty barrier, but now it is a journey she has to make to reach the person she loves. She also rejects the idea that distance is simply hard. For her, it measures strength, because you need strength to cross it.

From there, the poem moves from longing to promise. The loved one gives her hope and the urge to write, and fills an emptiness she hadn't known was there. Hearing "I love you" for the first time eased the weight of the world. She says she wants everything: the laughter, the arguments, the tears, even the homesick days. The mood is tender, earnest and a little aching. The final lines return to simple wishes, a hand held and arms around her, and a feeling that this love is real and irreplaceable.
