I Don't Kiss 'goodbye' — Poem analysis

I walked away and haven't said a thing They told me it's for the best To keep quiet. I knew i wouldn't make myself happy If I'd make you sad Cause that was never my intention. You should've seen me talk about you... I glowed so bright I could illuminate a whole boulevard At night. If only you saw... But this is not about it. This is about what I can't say to your face. It's been some time since we talked my mornings start with "fuck, another day" and coffee And end with me in tears, so late at night. I don't eat, i rarely talk To be honest I'm pretty walking dead Today i reached the point where i don't feel Any pain The tears roll on my cheeks on their own Because it hurt so much, It's impossible to hold it. I stopped going out, started lacking sleep There are nights where i don't get any Just because i fear seeing you In my dreams... I miss your voice. Only writing this made me cry... I miss you so much my heart aches But you... You don't miss me. And that's a pill harder to swallow. Acceptance... Never been my friend. I never left like this... No argument, No closure, no kiss No "why?" We've got questions but not answers. You haven't picked up your phone Oh wait, i haven't called. You haven't bothered either So what do we do now? I'm tired, my love. I would've taken a bullet for you But now, I don't even want that. To be honest, i never believed its possible To love someone too much... Well maybe, This was Too much.

Silence is the first thing we meet in Vlada Onica's "I Don't Kiss 'goodbye'", and it is the last thing the speaker is left with. "I walked away and haven't said a thing," the opening line admits, and everything after it is a belated attempt to say on paper what went unsaid. What starts as a protective choice ("They told me it's for the best / To keep quiet") hardens into a wound. The poem's central idea is that leaving without closure spares no one. The pain simply moves into mornings, sleepless nights and unanswered questions.

The speaker's reasoning is tangled from the start: "I knew I wouldn't make myself happy / If I'd make you sad." Their happiness and the other person's are knotted together, and the choice to stay quiet is presented as tenderness. The poem gives no names and no cause for the break. The reader never learns the "why", which matches the speaker's own "No 'why?'". The vocabulary is full of speech and its failure: *said*, *talk*, *voice*, *phone*, *called*. "You should've seen me talk about you..." sits against "It's been some time since we talked" and "I rarely talk". The distance between those lines is the poem's real subject.

The imagery works by contrast. Early on the speaker offers one expansive image: "I glowed so bright / I could illuminate a whole boulevard / At night." After that the language goes flat and ordinary, as if the light has been switched off. Mornings begin with "'fuck, another day' and coffee", and the blunt swearing next to the small domestic detail sounds like real exhaustion. Days end "in tears, so late at night", so the boulevard of the glow is replaced by the dark of the bedroom. "Walking dead" sums it up. The most striking moment is the paradox of numbness: "i don't feel / Any pain." The line break lets "don't feel" stand alone before the sentence is corrected, and then the tears "roll on my cheeks on their own". The body keeps grieving after the mind has gone quiet.

The form follows this unpolished honesty. There is no rhyme and no regular rhythm. Lines run from a full sentence to a single clipped phrase, and the poem reads like a message drafted late at night and never sent. Ellipses trail through it ("If only you saw...", "In my dreams...", "Acceptance..."), so thoughts keep stalling. Capitalisation wavers between "I" and "i", which, deliberate or not, adds to the feeling of something unedited. The phrase "To be honest" appears twice, like a verbal tic from someone not used to admitting any of this. The poem even catches itself in the act: "Only writing this made me cry..." Some of the figurative language is fresh. The familiar "bitter pill" becomes "a pill harder to swallow", and acceptance is personified as someone who has "Never been my friend."

The poem turns on the line "I never left like this... No argument, / No closure, no kiss / No 'why?'". The repeated "No" builds a list of absences, and "no kiss" quietly answers the title. Then comes a small, painful correction: "You haven't picked up your phone / Oh wait, i haven't called." The accusation turns back on the speaker mid-line, and we see that both people are keeping the same silence. The only endearment arrives just after, in "I'm tired, my love", at the point when the speaker has no energy left. The grand gestures of the earlier lines, the glowing and "I would've taken a bullet for you", end in the flat "now, I don't even want that." Even devotion has run out of strength.

The ending falls apart on the page: "Well maybe, / This was / Too much." The sentence shrinks line by line, like someone running out of breath. "Too much" can mean a love too large to survive, or a loss too heavy to carry, and the poem does not choose between them.

The poem is not ornate, and its strength is its directness. It captures a pain many readers will recognise, the grief of an ending that never properly happened, and it shows how little free verse needs: plain words, honest pauses and a speaker who finally says things aloud. Its title is in the present tense and puts "goodbye" in quotation marks, as a word the speaker cannot pronounce. By the last line that goodbye is still unsaid, and the poem has only described how heavy it is to carry.
